General visitor guidelines

General visiting hours

General visiting hours are 8 AM to 8 PM daily.

  • Visiting hours do not apply to designated inpatient visitors, maternity patients or behavioral health patients.
  • Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Clinical care needs or shared rooms may limit the number of visitors at the bedside.

Important: Beginning May 5, 2025, visitors at Doctors Hospital, Grant Medical Center and Riverside Methodist Hospital must provide a government-issued photo ID and have their photo taken before visiting.

Inpatient visitors

Patients may designate:

  • One patient advocate
  • One additional designated visitor

Designated visitors may be permitted to visit outside general visiting hours based on the patient's needs and at the discretion of the care team.

  • Caregivers count as one of the two designated visitors.
  • Patients may update their designated visitors by working with their care team.
  • Designated visitors must be 18 or older.
Behavioral health visitors

Behavioral health patients may have one visitor per day during scheduled visiting hours.

  • Adolescent visitation: 6 PM to 7 PM
  • Adult visitation: 5 PM to 6 PM
Labor and delivery visitors

During labor and delivery, patients may have up to two designated support people throughout their stay.

  • Support people must be selected in advance and cannot be substituted.
  • Doulas are permitted in addition to the two designated support people.
  • Minor patients may have both parents or guardians present, in addition to the baby's other parent.
Postpartum and NICU visitors

Following delivery, visiting hours for adults and siblings are 8 AM to 8 PM.

Emergency department visitors

Emergency department patients may have up to two adult visitors at the bedside, depending on the patient's condition and available space. Additional visitors may wait in public waiting areas.

Outpatient visitors

Patients receiving care in same-day surgery, procedural areas or OhioHealth Physician Group practices may have up to two adult visitors in the exam room or bedside area when clinically appropriate. Additional visitors may wait in family or public waiting areas.

  • Patients with disabilities or communication needs
  • Patients who need language interpretation support
  • Patients receiving hospice or end-of-life care

  • Relies on the caregiver for daily activities such as eating, bathing, toileting or communication
  • Has cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, a traumatic brain injury or another condition affecting decision-making
  • Requires support identified by the clinical team
Hospice and end-of-life care

Patients receiving hospice or end-of-life care may have adult visitors at any time.

  • Children may visit when accompanied by an adult and approved by the care team.
  • There is no limit to the number of visitors per day.
  • Visitor access may be adjusted based on patient care needs and room capacity.

Tobacco-free environment

To support the health and well-being of our patients, visitors and associates, all OhioHealth locations are tobacco-free. Tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are not permitted anywhere on OhioHealth property.

Safety and security

Security officers are available 24 hours a day to help address safety and security concerns. For the safety of everyone on our campuses, weapons, including firearms, are not permitted on OhioHealth property. Patients and visitors to our hospitals and free-standing emergency departments will be screened for weapons at all entrances, using metal detectors and bag checks. The screening process takes only a few minutes and helps ensure everyone's safety.
