Your role in your care

Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) and Comfort Care

A Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order lets you make choices about the care you would want if your heart or breathing were to stop. If you're considering a DNR order, talk with your care team about your wishes and the options available to you.

  • DNR Comfort Care (DNR-CC)
With a DNR-CC order, care is focused on your comfort. If your heart or breathing stops, CPR will not be started.
  • DNR Comfort Care Arrest (DNR-CC Arrest)
With a DNR-CC Arrest order, you will continue to receive medical treatment as ordered by your care team. If your heart or breathing stops, CPR will not be started.

Regardless of the type of DNR order you choose, comfort-focused care continues. This may include pain management, oxygen, nutrition, emotional support and other services to help maintain comfort and quality of life. Additional support from hospice, home health or pain management specialists may also be recommended.
