Give Yourself Every Advantage in Your Fight Against Cancer

A successful fight against cancer requires you to maintain a healthy diet, exercise routine and positive attitude. At OhioHealth, we’ve developed cancer information programs to help you with this important part of your cancer care.

We invite you to read about these cancer care programs, and also to talk to your medical oncologist and others on your OhioHealth cancer care team about how to incorporate healthy activities into your treatment plan.

OhioHealth Breast Cancer Physical Therapy Program

Giving your body the therapy it needs

Breast cancer treatment can create physical challenges that may leave you feeling fatigued, in pain and unable to move your arms and upper body as you have in the past.

To help women in treatment and survivorship for breast cancer get back to feeling like themselves again, we’ve created a physical therapy program just for them. The OhioHealth Breast Cancer Physical Therapy Program is designed to:

  • Eliminate pain
  • Restore joint mobility
  • Restore and maximize tissue flexibility
  • Eliminate risks of infections and lymphedema
  • Improve strength
  • Return to daily, vocational and recreational activities
  • Safely return to upper extremity use and function

What to Expect from the Program

Breast cancer patients can expect an individualized evaluation and exercise program that incorporates stretching and light strengthening, with the goals of enhancing joint mobility, restoring flexibility, reducing pain and improving strength, for a safe return to your personal and recreational activities.

Given your condition may fluctuate throughout cancer treatment, adjustments can and will be made to best accommodate your needs.

Appointments are made on a case-by-case basis, according to your needs and a discussion with the physical therapist.

How to Get Started

Talk to the doctors on your cancer care team about the OhioHealth Breast Cancer Physical Therapy Program. Discuss its benefits considering your individual breast cancer condition and if it can help you.

To participate in this program, you need a doctor’s prescription, which you can get from any of the physicians on your cancer care team.

For information about the program, please call Sally Ann Todhunter or Mindy Haren (614) 566-3810.

Most insurance companies cover physical therapy services. Contact your insurance provider for specific plan benefits.
