High Reliability Organization

High Reliability Organization (HRO)

All 35,000+ OhioHealth associates, leaders, and providers have been trained to adopt safety language and habits that are all-important in preventing errors that may lead to harm.

We strive for psychological safety

We create a culture where everyone is encouraged to speak up with concerns, report errors, and feel safe to do so.

  • We encourage identification and reporting of safety concerns to enable continuous improvement. This is foundational to a learning culture.
  • A ‘just culture’ is one that focuses on process concerns – this enables all to feel comfortable reporting good catches or other concerns.
  • This is also evidenced through our daily tiered safety huddles. The safety huddles start at the front line and provide escalations for support and resolution from site leaders all the way to the system leaders every day. This includes all hospitals and ambulatory care sites.
  • Providing a safe environment is a priority for the organization. Workplace violence is real and we have elevated our protective services presence, detection of weapons, and other efforts to assure the safety of all of our patients, visitors, associates, and providers.
  • We have over 1,000 HRO HeRO peer influencers across our healthcare system who are integrated throughout the departments to review and coach to our Reliability skills, spreading the importance of this journey and everyone’s role in it.
