Virtual Intensive Care Unit

Using telemedicine to provide critical care at all hours

The OhioHealth virtual intensive care unit (vICU®)

When you or a loved one needs intensive care, every moment matters. The vICU® gives patients in Ohio with an added layer of expertise and around-the-clock support, working alongside the bedside care team to provide 24/7 monitoring, rapid responses and coordinated treatment when it counts most.

How the vICU® works

The vICU® team is a group of specialized OhioHealth clinicians that work virtually to observe patients’ progress 24/7 using cameras, audio and vital sign monitors. This minute-by-minute observation can pick up small changes in the patient’s status. When the vICU® team spots a concern, they alert the ICU care team on-location so they can act right away.

Research shows that this close monitoring and quick response saves lives, reduces complications and helps patients recover faster.

Coordinated care

The bedside ICU care team always stays in charge of your care. They decide how involved the vICU® team will be whether that be round-the-clock monitoring, consultation or treatment.

No matter what level of support, the vICU® team works closely with your specialists to follow the treatment plan. It is one care team working together, with your safety at the center.
