Decedent Affairs
Navigating the next steps after loss
The OhioHealth Decedent Affairs Office provides support to patients and their families, health care teams, and community partners (law enforcement, coroners, donation centers, funeral homes) for continuity between end-of-life and decedent care.
What are the next steps after my loved one dies?
- You have the right to have a chaplain present when you visit your loved one following their death. Ask a nurse to call for a chaplain, if desired.
- After your visit, your loved one will be transported to a temperature-controlled environment at the hospital where the funeral home or crematory will arrive to pick them up for transport. It is recommended that all belongings be taken home by the legal next of kin — especially valuable jewelry, wallets, cell phones, etc. OhioHealth is not responsible for any belongings.
- You can contact the funeral home or cremation service personally or tell the chaplain or nurse. You can also call the Decedent Affairs Office to provide the funeral home or cremation service that the legal next of kin has chosen. This information must be provided by the legal next of kin. In the event you do not have a funeral home in mind at the time of death, call the Decedent Affairs Office. We will assist with answering questions, taking a verbal release from the legal next of kin or providing support and guidance as needed.
- Your loved one will not be released until we have confirmed the name of the funeral home with the legal next of kin.
- After your loved one is transported to the temperature-controlled environment at the hospital, no access is allowed by family or friends. Viewing should be scheduled with the funeral home or cremation service of your choice at that respective facility.
- If you have experienced a pregnancy loss at an OhioHealth care site, Decedent Affairs is available to support you. Please call our office if you have questions about final disposition.
