An MFM specialist, or perinatologist, is an obstetrician with extra training to manage high-risk pregnancies. They provide pre-pregnancy counseling, monitor fetal development and manage complications.

Why am I being referred to an MFM specialist?

You may be referred to an MFM specialist if you have a high-risk pregnancy due to pre-existing health conditions, complications during pregnancy or twins or other multiples.

What conditions make a pregnancy high risk?

Pre-existing health conditions : Diabetes, obesity, kidney disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis. Pregnancy complications : Preeclampsia (high blood pressure), reduced blood supply to the fetus. Fetal health issues : Genetic conditions, chromosomal disorders like Down syndrome. Twins or other multiples : Increased risk of preterm birth and other complications.

Will an MFM specialist perform my delivery?

At OhioHealth, MFM specialists do not perform deliveries but are available to assist your obstetrician.

What tests will an MFM specialist perform?

MFM specialists perform ultrasounds, genetic testing, diagnostic procedures and blood tests to monitor fetal development and identify complications.

What happens if my baby is diagnosed with a complication?

A team of specialists will provide care, discuss treatment options and prepare for your baby’s birth — including managing any complications or special needs.
