Our program provides residents a variety of clinical and procedural experiences with a diverse patient population, while still maintaining an emphasis on education. Its strengths include collaboration, autonomy and a full-time dedicated teaching staff that provides a challenging but user-friendly clinical, learning environment.
Upon completion of training, our residents are well prepared for a career, whether it’s pursuing a fellowship program, hospital medicine or an ambulatory primary care practice.

Our robust curriculum features a 4+2 model.
We are committed to your development, providing you faculty mentorship and access to dedicated attendings, all paired with clinical training that supports an increasing degree of automomy.
This offers four weeks of dedicated inpatient medicine alternating with two weeks of outpatient medicine. The 4+2 structure provides for an optimal balance of service and education, which allows our residents to train in a team-based outpatient clinic setting. The goal is to allow residents to focus their energies and attention in one clinical setting at a time.

- Ambulatory Clinic

We have a recently renovated, free standing ambulatory clinic on campus, which features 20 patient examination rooms to facilitate the 130 half-day continuity clinics required by the ACGME during the three-year residency. Residents are exposed to a diverse patient population that provides a broad range of socioeconomic and case complexity. They are supported by
- board certified attending physicians
- onsite laboratory
- full-time pharmacy
- full-time social worker
- financial counseling
The community medicine clinic also provides exposure to a variety of sub-specialty clinics, including hematology/oncology, gastroenterology, pulmonary, rheumatology, behavioral medicine, geriatrics and endocrinology. Surgery and dermatology resident clinics provide easy access to these specialty clinics for our patients.
Clinic Time
Residents average five half days of continuity clinics per week, along with two to three half days of administration time. Administrative time is used to facilitate patient refills, laboratory results and phone notes, as well as provide an opportunity to further advance scholarly activity/quality improvement projects. - Scholarly Activities and Quality Improvement

We have full-time, dedicated faculty members who are available to provide support and guidance for residents on their scholarly activities and quality improvement projects. Residents have displayed posters and given presentations at local, state and national conferences. Additionally, they have published case reports on unusual diseases in medical journals and published clinical research in sub-specialty medical journals. They have also presented and published on the topic of quality improvement projects.

- Clinical Tracks – Starting in PGY2 year, our residents can self-select to have the remainder of their training tailored to future career interests. Current tracks include: Hospital Medicine, Primary Care, Fellowship & Research. Rotations will vary within each track, with opportunity for mentorship, career guidance and individualized experiences.
- POCUS Curriculum – We have an integrated POCUS curriculum that covers both procedural and diagnostic POCUS using a combination of techniques including simulation training, didactics, small group training and optional image portfolio creation.
- ACE – We have an optional longitudinal Academy of Clinical Educators training curriculum for skills development in clinical teaching, curriculum development and medical education.
- JEDI – Recent creation of a residency/faculty-led Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Alliance focusing on efforts around support/mentorship, recruitment, community engagement and education/professional development. All are welcome, whether you identify with an underrepresented group or an ally/upstander.
- Didactics – Protected time didactics include: case conference, board review, clinical didactics, EKG & CXR conference, M&M, journal club, EBM, high-value care, health equity and more!
- Simulation Training – We utilize our comprehensive simulation center for procedural training, code blue training, EKG recognition testing, palliative care discussions, POCUS and “readiness for senior resident” training.
- Procedural Experience – Our residents gain ample experience in procedures, including: intubation, arterial lines, central lines, thoracentesis, paracentesis and lumbar puncture.
