Hospital Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer opportunities include but are not limited to the following. Access a comprehensive list. 

Hospital Volunteer

Help on patient floors to visit patients, refresh ice water, answer call lights, deliver patient meal trays, restock patient care supplies on units: discharge patients; greet and guide visitors; clerical work; information desk; deliver flowers and many more duties.

Volunteer RN

For Ohio licensed RNs who are either retired or want to come back into the nursing field to perform duties such as bathing, turning patients while in bed, meal assistance, obtain vital signs and other assistance to staff RNs. Two years of previous beside nursing experience required. Specialized training and application process is necessary.

High School Volunteer

Students 15 years old and above can apply to volunteer with similar responsibilities as adult volunteers. Essay of 50 words or less is required - "Why I want to volunteer at Riverside Methodist." Must submit signed Parental Consent for Minors form, Student Volunteer Commitment and Teen Dress Code. Teens are required to provide proof of immunizations. Teen shifts are limited to five hours a day.

Dog Visitation

Visit patients on approved floors. Visit in waiting areas with family members and visitors. Must be registered with Pet Partners, TDI or The Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

Sewing Guild

Join the 200+ ladies who lovingly sew, knit and crochet items for our patients at Riverside. These volunteers sew at the hospital or at home.

Behavioral Health Volunteer

Volunteers must be actively working in a recovery program. They must also be sober and have maintained their sobriety for one year consistently prior to initiating their volunteer work. Those interested should contact Behavioral Health at (614) 566.4223 for more information.

How to Get Started

Riverside Methodist Hospital volunteers are required to take certain steps before starting their volunteer responsibilities.  

Prospective volunteers who have recently been hospitalized must wait six months before volunteering. Prospective volunteers must be able to work independently and commit to one year and 100 hours per year of service.

  1. Complete a volunteer application.
  2. Complete the Background Check Disclosure and Authorization Form for a background check/fingerprinting (18 years of age and above). No fee to the volunteer.
  3. Students in high school must be at least fifteen years of age and in the ninth grade to apply. They are required to have parental consent and to sign the student contract and dress code. They must have a seasonal flu shot and submit a signed Parental Consent for Minor Volunteers form, which will give permission for the initial one-time two-step TB test and the seasonal flu shot. Documentation of immunizations is required.  College Students must complete the Immunization Review for High Risk Areas form and provide required documentation of immunizations.
  4. Get a one-time 2 step TB test and have a documented yearly seasonal flu shot. Those wanting to work in the Emergency Room or Maternity area must complete the Immunization Review for High Risk Areas form. No fee to the volunteer.
  5. Interview with a staff member in the volunteer office.
  6. Purchase a volunteer uniform. Uniforms are sold in the Volunteer Office. Cash or check only.
  7. A badge must be obtained in our ID Badge Center near our Security Department prior to orientation. A valid license, state ID or student ID must be presented to obtain a badge. Adults 18 years of age and above will be fingerprinted at this time with no cost to the volunteer.
  8. Attend a New Volunteer Orientation. Orientations are held on the third Wednesday of the month from 6-7:30 pm. There is no orientation in December.

In your email, please indicate during which shift you desire to volunteer: Day (M-F 8a-3:00p); Evening (M-F 3-8:30p) or Weekends (8:30a - 8:30p). Also note whether you are an adult or a teen. Teen shifts are limited to 5 hours a day. We do not accept volunteers for summer breaks, holidays-only or episodic volunteering.
