You'll give the valuable gift of your time and have the reward of helping others in need.

Special volunteer opportunities

The following are some special volunteer opportunities you may be interested in, with specific application and forms to fill out. Our volunteer opportunities are not limited to this list.

Adult Hospital Volunteer

Adult hospital volunteers may help on patient floors to visit patients, refresh ice water, deliver patient meal trays, restock patient care supplies on units, discharge patients, greet and guide visitors in our busy lobbies, volunteer at the information desks, deliver flowers and many more duties. All adult applicants should fill out the required forms below and mail or email them to the Volunteer Services office.

Volunteer RN

Volunteer RN opportunities are available for Ohio Licensed RNs who are either retired or want to come back into the nursing field to perform duties such as bathing, ambulating, meal assistance, obtaining vital signs and other assistance to the  staff RNs.  Requirements are: Two years of previous bedside nursing, not a current OhioHealth associate, have an active Ohio License and current BLS certification.

High School Students

High school students 15 years of age and above and at least in the 9th grade may apply to volunteer with similar responsibilities as adult volunteers. High school students are limited to five hour shifts and no more than three days a week.

College Students

Volunteering at Riverside Methodist is a great opportunity for college students who are planning to pursue a medical career and want to gain experience interacting with patients and medical personnel. All majors will find this experience beneficial.

Dog Visitation

A therapy dog visits patients on approved floors and in waiting areas with family members and visitors.  The dog must be registered with Pet Partners, TDI or The Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

Sewing Guild

Join the 175 ladies who lovingly sew, knit and crochet items for our patients at Riverside Methodist Hospital. These volunteers sew at the hospital or at home.

Behavioral Health Volunteer

Volunteers must be actively working in a recovery program. They must also be sober and have maintained their sobriety for one year consistently prior to initiating their volunteer service. Those interested should contact Behavioral Health at (614) 566.4223 for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities at our Off-site Locations

Volunteer opportunities are also avliable at McConnell Heart Health Center, Bing Cancer Center, Riverside Outpatient Surgery Center and John J Gerlach Center for Senior Health.

Please note:

  • All required paperwork listed under the area of interest must be received in the volunteer office before an application will be processed.
  • A social security number is required.
  • All high school and college students are required to submit documentation of immunizations with the application.
  • All volunteers are required to have a one-time, two-step TB test given in Associate Health at Riverside Methodist. No cost to the volunteer.
  • Adults 18 years of age and older are required to submit the Volunteer Information, Volunteer Disclosure, Volunteer Authorization background check forms with the application. No cost to the volunteer.
  • All volunteers are required to have a yearly documented flu shot between December 1 and March 31. Exemptions for religious or medical reasons are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. No cost to the volunteer, if received at an OhioHealth approved site.
  • Volunteers who want to serve in a maternity area or emergency department must provide documentation of immunizations.
  • All prospective volunteers will interview with a Volunteer Services associate.
  • Uniforms are required. The official uniform is purchased in the Volunteer Office. Cash or check only.
  • An ID Badge is required. Badges are printed at Riverside Methodist. To obtain an ID Badge, a valid driver’s license, state ID or student ID must be presented. Badges are given out at orientation. No cost to the volunteer.
  • All volunteers attend a 1 ½ hour New Volunteer Orientation. Orientations are usually held on the third Saturday of the month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. There is no orientation in December. All completed forms and medical services must be completed and documented before you may attend orientation.
  • A two-hour training class is offered to all new volunteers. This class familiarizes new volunteers with wheelchair operation, finding their way around the hospital and volunteer tasks on patient floors.
  • All new volunteers receive a position description and individual training for the assignment selected.
  • We do not accept volunteers for summer breaks, holidays-only or episodic volunteering.
  • There are times when applications may be held or not accepted due to an overwhelming number of applicants.
