What is a cancer screening?

A cancer screening is a test that looks for signs of cancer before symptoms appear. Common screenings include mammograms, Pap tests, colonoscopies and low-dose CT scans for lung cancer.

Why are cancer screenings important?

Screenings can detect cancer early, when treatment is most effective. Some tests, like colonoscopies, can even prevent cancer by finding and removing precancerous growths.

When should I start cancer screenings?

Breast cancer: Most women should begin annual mammograms at age 40. Cervical cancer: Pap tests start at age 21; HPV testing begins at age 30. Colorectal cancer: Screening starts at age 45 for most adults. Lung cancer: Adults ages 50–80 with a history of heavy smoking may qualify. Always talk to your doctor about your personal risk factors.

Are cancer screenings painful?

Most screenings are quick and cause little or no discomfort. Mammograms may feel briefly uncomfortable, and colonoscopies are done under sedation so you won’t feel pain.

Does insurance cover cancer screenings?

Regular cancer screenings and preventive care can help find cancer early — when it’s most treatable — and even prevent it altogether. At OhioHealth, we follow national guidelines to provide screenings for breast, cervical, colorectal and lung cancer, along with personalized risk assessments for those at higher risk.

Cancer screenings we provide

Breast cancer screening (mammogram):

Recommended annually starting at age 40 for most women. Mammograms use low-dose X-rays to detect breast changes early, often before symptoms appear. Schedule your mammogram.

Cervical cancer screening (Pap and HPV tests):

Pap tests check for abnormal cells in the cervix, while HPV testing looks for the virus that can cause cervical cancer. Screenings typically begin at age 21 and continue every 3-5 years depending on age and results. To schedule, speak with your OB-GYN or primary care provider.

Colorectal cancer screening (colonoscopy):

Colonoscopies can detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous. For most adults, screening starts at age 45 and is repeated every 10 years if results are normal. To schedule, a referral is required from your primary care provider or gastroenterologist.

Lung cancer screening (low-dose CT scan):
