Interventional radiology treatments and technology

Tumor treatment

  • Ablation: Uses heat or cold to destroy tumors with imaging guidance.
  • Biopsy: Removes a small tissue sample for diagnosis.
  • Embolization: Blocks blood flow to tumors or delivers targeted chemotherapy or radiation.

Fluid drainage

  • Paracentesis: Drains excess fluid from the abdomen (ascites).
  • Thoracentesis: Drains fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion).
  • Catheter placement: For ongoing fluid drainage at home.

Venous access

  • Port or catheter placement: Provides easier access for chemotherapy, blood draws or medication infusions.

Pain Management

  • Nerve blocks: Injects medication near nerves to relieve pain.
  • Ablation: Destroys pain-causing nerves using heat or cold.
  • Vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty: Injects medical cement into fractured vertebrae to reduce pain and improve mobility.
