Interventional radiology treatments and technology
Tumor treatment
- Ablation: Uses heat or cold to destroy tumors with imaging guidance.
- Biopsy: Removes a small tissue sample for diagnosis.
- Embolization: Blocks blood flow to tumors or delivers targeted chemotherapy or radiation.
Fluid drainage
- Paracentesis: Drains excess fluid from the abdomen (ascites).
- Thoracentesis: Drains fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion).
- Catheter placement: For ongoing fluid drainage at home.
Venous access
- Port or catheter placement: Provides easier access for chemotherapy, blood draws or medication infusions.
Pain Management
- Nerve blocks: Injects medication near nerves to relieve pain.
- Ablation: Destroys pain-causing nerves using heat or cold.
- Vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty: Injects medical cement into fractured vertebrae to reduce pain and improve mobility.
