Other ways we will help you succeed

As a preliminary medicine resident, you will be set up for success in your PGY2 program and beyond by a strong curriculum and extensive experiences. But that’s not all. You will be supported by talented faculty, develop close bonds with your fellow residents, and have resources available to you that can only be found at an organization like OhioHealth.

Rotation Opportunities

Preliminary medicine residents at Riverside Methodist are introduced to many different aspects of medicine, including subspecialties across the outpatient, emergency department, inpatient and critical care domains of our health system. You will also have experiences in a variety of medical subspecialty consultative services.

Your required rotations will include:

  • Ambulatory medicine
  • Critical care
  • Emergency medicine
  • General medicine
  • Subspecialty medicine
Research and Development Opportunities

Many of our residents take advantage of a research elective that can be done at Riverside Methodist, or as an outside rotation. The OhioHealth Research Institute will provide you with the tools you need to plan and conduct your research project, including access to existing research, clinical and data coordination, contract guidance, quality assurance and other types of support.

An expansive simulation environment will also be available to you through the Center for Medical Education + Innovation. This advanced technology allows for hands-on learning through patient simulators in a Virtual Care Unit and clinical skills laboratories.

Camaraderie and Culture

Our culture at OhioHealth is one of our greatest strengths. We operate as a family, and you will find a high level of camaraderie among OhioHealth residents and attending and faculty physicians. The vast majority of our faculty volunteer their time because they are passionate about physician education. They want to see you succeed and get the most out of every rotation and your residency as a whole.

You will be treated equally to PGY1 categorical and transitional year residents, and will be expected to treat your fellow residents with respect. All of our residents are encouraged to embrace their differences, listen to one another, and build an environment that is welcoming and supportive for all.

Resident Wellness

We believe that wellness and resilience are imperative to being an effective resident. Riverside Methodist is a national leader in the provider wellness field. We regularly use the Mayo Clinic’s Well-Being Index to identify and address burnout and distress, provide a format for reflective groups, and offer proactive meetings with our Physician Health and Wellness group to help you manage stress.

Extracurricular Activities

Our residents participate in a number of social and service activities. These include outings to Columbus Crew SC and Columbus Blue Jackets games, weekly off-campus happy hours, and organized sports. We also emphasize the importance of being a part of our community and to giving back to it. Our residents regularly host clothing drives, holiday food drives, and participate in fundraising events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Outcomes and Placement

Our preliminary medicine residents continue their training at OhioHealth and across the United States. While we have graduates throughout the nation in a variety of practice environments, a high percentage of our residents ultimately return to OhioHealth for their career, having gained an appreciation for our culture and development opportunities.
