Medical Education

Preliminary Medicine residents acquire patient care experience by rotating through inpatient and outpatient medical services. Inpatient training takes place at Riverside Methodist Hospital's main campus while outpatient experience is held through an ambulatory setting either at the OhioHealth Bing Cancer Care or the Family Practice Center. Ongoing supervision, feedback and evaluation come from full-time faculty, practicing physicians and other residents.

Preliminary Medicine residents have a tremendous opportunity to perform a variety of clinical procedures, which include the following:

  • Arterial line
  • Arthrocentesis/large joint
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Central venous line/introducer
  • ET intubation
  • Lumbar puncture/spinal tap
  • Paracentesis
  • Skin biopsy
  • Swan-Ganz catheter
  • Thoracentesis
  • Transvenous pacemaker
