Riverside's General Surgery Residency is a five-year, ACGME-accredited program. Five categorical and four preliminary residents per year are accepted into this comprehensive program. You’ll practice in Riverside Methodist’s 1,059-bed teaching hospital — ranked among the nation's best.

We provide rotations at nationally recognized academic and medical centers and smart technology in hospital-replica facilities. From basic suturing to advanced robotic surgery, faculty and mentors support you as you gain proficiency in general surgery and subspecialties.

In addition to Riverside Methodist Hospital and other OhioHealth inpatient and outpatient facilities, residents rotate with our regional and national partners, including:

  • The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center – a multidisciplinary academic medical center
  • Nationwide Children's Hospital – America’s second-largest pediatric hospital and research center
  • The Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center – serving veterans in the main Columbus, Ohio, facility and in community-based outpatient clinics
CME+I: Laboratory Skills Center

The Center for Medical Education & Innovation (CME+I) replicates a hospital environment – from scrub sinks, operating rooms and equipment to cross-disciplinary collaboration. This state-of-the-art facility features varied simulation technologies and capabilities, including a monitored Virtual Care Unit (VCU) with adult, pediatric and infant patient simulators.

Surgical Skills Overview

Residents will gain experience in assisting and performing a variety of surgical procedures at The Center for Medical Education & Innovation (CME+I), under the supervision of surgical physicians and associates.

  • LapSim – laparoscopic simulator training
  • FES – fundamentals of endoscopic surgery
  • FLS – fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery
  • ABLS – advanced burn life support
  • Robotics – technology, techniques and robotic-assisted procedures
  • Vascular surgery – open surgery and endovascular
  • Other procedures – general surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and other specialized procedures and skills
Scholarly Activities and Quality Improvement

Full-time, dedicated faculty members who are available to provide support and guidance for residents on their scholarly activities and quality improvement projects. Residents have displayed posters and given presentations at local, state and national conferences. Additionally, they have published case reports on unusual diseases in medical journals and published clinical research in sub-specialty medical journals. They have also presented and published on the topic of quality improvement projects.

Mentorship Program and Board Pass Rate

We match residents who have an interest in a particular specialty with a faculty member in that specialty to provide one-to-one guidance.

Our program has an excellent board pass rate. Our program’s five-year average is 95%.
