Our hospice and palliative medicine fellows learn specialty palliative medicine skills with world-class clinical teams led by Charles F. von Gunten, MD, PhD, FAAHPM, FAACE and Frank D. Ferris, MD, FAAHPM, FAACE, who are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in palliative medicine
What to Expect
Your fellowship experience will include:
A balanced clinical experience in:
- Community teaching hospitals caring for both adults
- and children
- A state-of-the-art free-standing 24-bed hospice unit
- Home hospice care, including long-term care
- Elective opportunities of your choice
A wide range of learning experiences:
- Direct patient care with mentorship by palliative medicine
- experts and interdisciplinary team members
- Multidisciplinary team and tumor board conferences
- Didactic and interactive case-based group learning
- Simulated patient experiences
- Specialty conferences
In addition:
- Participation in the teaching of medical students, residents and other fellows.
- Mentorship and experiences to improve your teaching and leadership skills.
- Collaboration in the integration of palliative care and hospice care into OhioHealth’s strategy for population-based care throughout an integrated healthcare network serving urban and rural populations in the heartland of Ohio.
- Some of your learning experiences will be shared with the palliative medicine fellows training at the Ohio State University.
Our Teaching Settings
Your learning will take place in locations that include the following:
Riverside Methodist Hospital, an 800-bed community teaching tertiary referral center with a wide range of medical services, 100 ICU and 100 ED beds; specialty services include congestive heart failure, neurosciences, oncology and obstetrics
Grant Medical Center, a 350-bed urban surgical and Level 1 Trauma Center teaching hospital with a wide range of medical and surgical services; expertise in geriatric medicine
Kobacker House, a 24-bed acute hospice inpatient unit run by palliative medicine physicians
OhioHealth Hospice, a healthcare system-owned, Medicare-certified hospice; ADC is 420+; 2/3 at home; 1/3 in extended care facilities; full-time palliative medicine physicians are uniquely integrated into each interdisciplinary team
Nationwide Children's Hospital, a leading academic pediatric teaching hospital with specialty inpatient and home pediatric hospice services
Elective opportunities in a wide range of programs, within OhioHealth, and externally
