Research at the McConnell Heart Health Center  is an interdisciplinary research program established in 2002 through the generous support of John H. McConnell to respond to the need for scientific information on primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Although the initial focus of our work has been on the prevention of cardiovascular disease, research at the McConnell Heart Health Center generates scientific investigations on the following that broaden the scope of knowledge on all human health:

  • gender differences in disease management
  • weight management
  • depression in chronic disease
  • musculoskeletal disorders
  • coagulation disorders
  • age-related issues in the management of chronic disease

Research at the McConnell Heart Health Center operates on the belief that making a difference in chronic disease management as well as the primary and secondary prevention of disease will benefit every member of society.

Here, physicians from many specialties, nurses, exercise physiologists, registered dieticians, physical therapists, pharmacists and statisticians work to develop and provide high-quality clinical research studies and services.

Current research projects

We conduct research projects in several areas, including epidemiology and outcomes, healthcare quality and delivery, investigator-initiated randomized clinical trials, and clinical trials of new medical treatments.

The McConnell Center is participating in the following current research projects:

  • Clever, a claudication trial funded by the NIH

Who can participate

Many of our research studies are open to patients interested in access to new medical treatments. They are also open to patients who would like to participate in comparative studies of currently available medications. In some cases, clinical research studies provide therapies not available to the general public.

Patients involved in any of our studies receive special attention from our clinical research team, including physicians, research nurses, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, as well as other services and programs at the McConnell Center at no cost.

Experienced managers of research protocols

Our clinical research team has experience in the management of research protocols for new medications. The physician investigators and staff in the McConnell Center's Clinical Research Department are committed to creating a partnership with physicians and patients to advance clinical medicine.
