A Message from McConnell's General Manager 

Dear McConnell Heart Health Center Members,

Spring is finally here!  I hope you have been able to get out and enjoy the sunshine. Spring is always a great time to try something new and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. I hope you are thinking of joining us, or have already registered for our annual 5K. This event grows each year and is also the kick-off to our American Heart Associate fundraising! The 3.2 miles spent running and walking around Peggy’s Path is becoming a member tradition, and we hope you will choose to join us. If you would like to participate but cannot run or walk in the race, we are always looking for volunteers and people to cheer on our participants. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know, and I will get you in touch with our race organizers.

With the warmer weather around the corner, it is a perfect time to think about how you can increase your level of physical activity when you are not at the Center. The more steps you get in each day, the healthier you can become. Park farther away from entrances, take the stairs instead of the elevator, commit to 10 minutes of outdoor activity every day and be active whenever you can. Being physically active is not only good for our physical health but also for our mental health. Exercise and physical activity can be a great stress reliever. When you find yourself feeling “stressed out,” take a few minutes to walk outside, take some deep breaths and allow yourself a short mental vacation. Being aware of your mental health, as well as your physical health, can go a long way in living a longer and healthier life.

Thank you for being active members at MHHC. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and make a positive impact on your lives. We are honored that you choose to come to MHHC, and we will continue to work hard for you.

Blood Drive at McConnell … Please Help and Sign Up to Donate! 

Our country's current need for blood is urgent … you can help!  Each day, more than 41,000 blood donations are needed to save lives across the country, and every two seconds someone in the United States is in need of blood. Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, less than 10 percent actually does each year.  

The American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at McConnell on Monday, April 13, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Classroom A. If you would like to donate, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are always welcome, but space may be limited. Please bring a valid picture ID. Thank you in advance for your help!

Save the Date! MHHC 5k Fun Run/Walk

Just a reminder… The Annual McConnell Heart Health Center 5k Fun Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, April 25, on the McConnell Heart Health Center Campus. Runner’s race starts at 8:00 a.m. and the walker’s race will begin at 8:30 a.m. Cost for members and non-members is $20.

All proceeds benefit the American Heart Association and the OhioHealth Foundation.

Race registration forms are now available at the McConnell Heart Health Center. To guarantee your shirt size, the last day to register is Friday, April 3.

Did You Know? Interesting MHHC Facts and Tips

Did you know there is a walking and running lane on the indoor track?

For safety of all participants on the track, we have labeled the inside lanes for walkers and the outside lanes for runners. The outside running lanes allows runners to maintain safe running and be aware of those walking on the track, so they can make adjustments as necessary, especially when coming around the corners. It is also important to look both ways before entering the track to review which direction the track is going for the day, as well as be aware of other members using the track.

Did you know that we track class attendance for all of our group exercise classes?

Class attendance is important for group exercise classes to stay on the schedule. Our goal is to have an average of at least 6 participants in each class. With more than 85 land classes per week, there are many choices, so we want to offer a balance of classes based on requests, studio availability and instructor availability. Please be open-minded, try a new class and tell your friends and family, too! It’s good for your body and mind to change your routine and mix it up!

Did you know it is important to arrive on time to classes?

Arriving on time for all group exercise classes is crucial for equipment set-up, proper warm-up and flow of the class. It’s disruptive coming into a class late. Please arrive early enough to get your equipment or spin bike set up, and do not enter a class more than 5 minutes late. 

Congratulations to Our Grand Prize Winner of Our 2015 January Membership Promotion! 

New member John Myers received a POLAR FT60 Fitness Heart Rate Monitor as the grand prize winner of our January membership promotion. Thank you to all of our new members who joined under this promotion!

Locker Room Bench Upgrades 

Over the course of the next 6 to 12 months, the benches in the men’s and women’s locker rooms will be updated, including the vinyl fabric and wooden framework. We are working with our vendor to take only two benches at a time, so there is as little disruption and inconvenience as possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this facility upgrade.

Better Connections: We Are Preparing to Upgrade Our Electronic Medical Record System 

Because we value you and your trust in us, we want to take a moment to let you know of some changes that will be coming to the McConnell Heart Health Center soon.

OhioHealth is in the process of implementing a new electronic medical record (EMR) system at all of our hospitals and other care sites. EMRs offer the most advanced and secure ways to store, retrieve and continuously update your comprehensive medical history — all in one place. 

McConnell Heart Health Center is making this transition in phases: on April 8 then May 3. We are working hard to ensure a smooth and seamless process with minimal impact to you, but we want you to know how this could affect you during an upcoming visit. Patient wait times may be a little longer. We may need to update some of your personal information that you provided in the past, but we hope by scheduling fewer patients for the first few weeks, we can minimize any inconvenience. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early for your appointments.

If you are a patient in one of our clinics, the new EMR will offer all of our patients access to an online patient portal called OhioHealth MyChart. We encourage you to sign up for OhioHealth MyChart when it becomes available, so you can access many of your test results and even communicate with your physician electronically.

Ultimately, our new EMR will improve our efficiency and your experience in the office. We ask you to bear with us as we learn a new way of doing things. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this transition.

Donate to the Buck-A-Book Table

We welcome any book donations you would like to make to the Buck-A-Book table. The table is set up at different times during the year, and 100% of the proceeds benefit organizations such as the Arthritis Foundation, American Heart Association and Operation Feed. If you have books to donate, we would be happy to receive them from you and include them in the fundraising events. Thank you!
