A Message from McConnell's General Manager

Dear MHHC Members,

Fall is officially upon us!  I hope that everyone who attended the Member Appreciation Party had a wonderful time. It was great to see so many of you there enjoying the evening. Everyone at MHHC is so appreciative of you and the trust you place in the Center and our team. We wouldn’t be here without you.

We are gearing up for some great events this month and hope you can join us. October is National Physical Therapy Month! Join us on October 6 from 12 to 1 p.m. for our Expert Is In Series taught by Spine, Sport and Joint Center Physical Therapists on rotator cuff injuries. You can register for this complimentary educational class by calling the Communication Desk at (614) 566.5356. October also kicks off our Arthritis Foundation fundraising. We are excited to continue our Chili Cook-Off and the Pumpkin Carving Contest. You can find flyers for these events in the newsletter and located around the Center.

I also want to thank everyone who took the time to complete the membership survey in July. We learn a great deal from our members every year from this survey, and I am excited to share some of the results with you. This year we had 616 members complete the survey (that is 100 more than last year). Here are a few points about those who responded to the survey:

  • Of all respondents, 41 percent were members 0 to 3 years, 33 percent were members for 3 to 10 years, and 23 percent were members for greater than 10 years.
  • We had 206 members respond to our questions about utilization (or awareness) of the clinical services over the last year. This was a new question we added to determine how much our members use or have awareness of all of the offerings MHHC provides. Our largest awareness comes from Physical Therapy, Weight Management, Dietitian visits and Cardiac Rehab. Throughout the next year, we will spend time spotlighting our clinical services to continue to grow awareness and utilization as you or a friend/family member may need us.
  • Ninety-five percent of members say they would either "definitely" or "probably" recommend MHHC to their family members, friends or colleagues.
  • We also received more than 1,000 written comments on aspects of the Center you enjoy most, as well as ideas to help us continue to grow and develop our services. One of the most commented enjoyable aspects of the Center was our staff and overall facilities. We take all comments into consideration and look forward to continuing to grow our services and opportunities based on needs of our membership.

Thank you for being active members at MHHC. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and make a positive impact on your lives. We are honored that you choose to come to MHHC, and we will continue to work hard for you.

What Are the New Banners Hanging in the Atrium?

Are you curious about the new nine banners hanging on the walls of the Atrium in the OhioHealth McConnell Heart Health Center?  Each year, since 2006, The McConnell Center has been the recipient of a nationwide award from Press Ganey. This is an impressive accomplishment, shared by only a few healthcare organizations in the nation.

Who is Press Ganey and what does a Press Ganey award represent?  For nearly 30 years, Press Ganey’s mission has been to support healthcare providers in understanding and improving the entire patient experience. As a strategic business partner to more than 10,000 health care organizations across the country and across the continuum of care, Press Ganey is the leader in helping create continuous, sustainable improvement.

Press Ganey recognizes a select group of its clients, such as The McConnell Center, with awards that recognize efforts to improve the quality and safety of patient care; to provide a positive and collaborative environment for employees and physicians; and ultimately to deliver exceptional patient experiences. Award winners are recognized each year in November at Press Ganey's National Client Conference.

To achieve these awards, the recipient has to maintain the 95th percentile or higher for each of the past 24 quarters on surveys completed by patients who receive care in the facility. That sort of accomplishment occurs by commitment to patients, members and guests. What's more, these consecutive-year honors have been accomplished during a times of change, including the transition to Electronic Medical Records, declines in healthcare reimbursement and significant economic swings. This achievement says something about the culture of commitment and service and about each and every associate who works in the facility receiving an award.  After all, the 'Experience' a patient, member or guest receives can begin with a phone call received by a caring associate or by driving onto a well-groomed campus, before the clinical care occurs.

In Memoriam: Kimm Marks

On April 30, 2015, we lost a dear friend and long-time Yoga Instructor at the McConnell Heart Health Center.

Kimm Marks was truly a unique spirit. She was kind, compassionate and loyal to so many who knew her. Even throughout her lengthy battle with cancer, she would ask about others and want to know what was going on in their lives.

Kimm is missed greatly and thought about often. With the generosity of her friends, family, associates of the McConnell Center and the OhioHealth Foundation, we were able to place a paver on the grounds of McConnell along Peggy’s Path.

The photo below shows the paver, with a picture of Kimm.

If you would like to make a donation to benefit the McConnell Heart Health Center in Memory of Kimm Marks, or have a paver placed in honor/memory of a loved one, please call the OhioHealth Foundation at (614) 788.3882.

Cardiac Rehab News

Our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program will be adjusting the master schedule of cardiac rehab exercise classes beginning the week of October 5, 2015. The main changes the McConnell Heart Health Center will see is both the 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. classes will move to a Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule here at McConnell. This will allow more options for our cardiac rehab participants, as well as decrease congestion between our larger morning classes.

The cardiac rehab exercise space is considered a patient care area, while we are providing clinical services for both cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. We are frequently asked why we are unable to have our other McConnell members exercise in this area, while we are providing cardiac and pulmonary rehab sessions. Medicare and other private insurance guidelines require that we have a dedicated space for both cardiac and pulmonary rehab to provide clinical services. We are also required to provide a separate dedicated space as part of our certification with The American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. As in all clinical areas within OhioHealth, we aim to provide our services, while protecting the privacy of our participants. We discuss many personal and sensitive issues during rehab and try our best to keep this information private for our participants. If you have questions regarding this policy, please do not hesitate to ask a cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation staff member.

We are in the process of designing posters to reflect our new schedule.  These will be posted in the cardiac rehab exercise area to give members notice of the upcoming changes. We are also working to improve the overall signage to inform members when our classes are in session and the area is closed while providing clinical services.

Blood Drive at McConnell … Please Help and Sign Up to Donate!

Our Country's Current Need for Blood is Urgent … You can help!  Each day, more than 41,000 blood donations are needed to save lives across the country, and every two seconds someone in the United States is in need of blood.  Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, less than 10 percent actually do each year. The current level of blood donations needed in our country is urgent … You can help!  The American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at McConnell on Monday, October 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Classroom A. If you would like to donate, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment.  Walk-ins are always welcome but space may be limited. Please bring a valid picture ID. Thank you in advance for your help!

Don't forget to encourage others to join you by posting pictures and sharing your donation experience on Facebook and Twitter with #ChooseYourDay!

OhioHealth Gratitude Tree

For nearly 30 years, OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital has illuminated the holiday season for patients and families with Gratitude Trees placed throughout the hospital. These beautiful trees are an opportunity to express our gratitude and pay tribute to our loved ones and their caregivers.

For the first time ever, the OhioHealth McConnell Heart Health Center, which is part of the Riverside Methodist Hospital campus, will decorate a Gratitude Tree in the Atrium on the lower level to join this celebration.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for the tree in the form of a $5,000 philanthropic gift. The individual or corporate sponsor will have the name of their choice on full display in front of the Gratitude Tree for the month of December.

For more information on sponsoring a Gratitude Tree, please contact Craig Scheidler from the OhioHealth Foundation at (614) 788.3882 or by e-mail at craig.scheidler@ohiohealth.com
