A Message from McConnell's General Manager

Dear MHHC Members,

November is Diabetes Awareness Month! Chances are that you or someone you know has diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, changing your diet, increasing your physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight can help you prevent and reduce your risk of diabetes. Regular physical activity can help you lower your blood glucose and AIC. Remember to keep active and eat right to manage and prevent further symptoms of diabetes. Did you know that MHHC offers individualized diabetes counseling for Type 1, Type 2, gestational diabetes, and for abnormal glucose antepartum? One-on-one appointments are available with our certified diabetes educators, nurses and registered dietitians. Appointments may be covered by insurance with a physician referral. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact( 614) 566.5096.

Chef Mike will once again be providing a cooking class to help get you ready for a perfect holiday dinner. Participants will learn the basics of roasting a great turkey and how to organize yourself to ensure a successful holiday dinner. The menu will include roasted Brussel sprouts with garlic and parmesan cheese, rosemary maple whipped sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing with sausage, green beans with brown butter and almonds, and a pumpkin mousse. There is a 10 participant maximum, so register today at (61) 566.5356 (members: $59; non-members: $69). Get more information in this PDF.

As the holidays get closer, remember to do your best to stay on track with your healthy-living goals. Our new program “Weigh Bells Ring…Are you Listening” will be running from November 15 through January 3 to help you stay on track over those busy holiday weeks. A $10 donation to the Arthritis Foundation is all it takes to enter. Participants who maintain their weight throughout the program will be entered to win a free month of membership! See below for more information.

There are many exciting things happening this time of year, and we thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you each month.

 MHHC Did You Know…?

As a member at the McConnell Heart Health Center, your voice can be heard! If you have a concern or issue you would like for our staff to address, you are welcome to fill out a comment card located near the fitness desk on the fitness floor or at the communication desk. A staff member will then follow up with you regarding your concern. In those same areas, you are also able to praise a McConnell associate for going above and beyond normal duties by filling out a “Power of One” to show your appreciation. We enjoy knowing and hearing about your experience at the McConnell Heart Health Center.

There are evening group exercise classes at 6 p.m. or after, Monday through Friday. Come try Zumba or FIT Circuit or Express Cardio Blast or Ballet & Core or Pilates or Yoga or Spinning! There are plenty of options on our Group Exercise Schedules. Trying new activities are a great way to challenge your mind and body, meet new people and switch up your routine.

OhioHealth Gratitude Tree

For nearly 30 years, OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital has illuminated the holiday season for patients and families with Gratitude Trees placed throughout the hospital. These beautiful trees are an opportunity to express our gratitude and pay tribute to our loved ones and their caregivers.

For the first time ever, the OhioHealth McConnell Heart Health Center, which is part of the Riverside Methodist Hospital campus, will decorate a Gratitude Tree in the Atrium on the lower level to join this celebration.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for the tree in the form of a $5,000 philanthropic gift. The individual or corporate sponsor will have the name of their choice on full display in front of the Gratitude Tree for the month of December.

For more information on sponsoring a Gratitude Tree, please contact Craig Scheidler from the OhioHealth Foundation at (614) 788.3882 or by e-mail at craig.scheidler@ohiohealth.com
