A Message from McConnell's General Manager

Dear McConnell Heart Health Center Members,

Happy Spring! The month of April is set to be a very busy one this year. We will be celebrating Medical Fitness week during April with several events. Did you know that MHHC is one of only three Certified Medical Fitness Centers in Ohio? The Medical Fitness Association (MFA) is a professional organization whose mission it is to respond to the needs of medically integrated centers throughout the world. MFA helps to provide industry standards, educational program, benchmarks, outcome measurements and professional development. As a certified center we are helping to establish benchmarks for the industry and have met or exceeded requirements to help Medical Fitness Centers achieve new standards in health and fitness.

I hope you are thinking of joining us for our annual 5K. This event grows every year and it so exciting to watch our members reach their goals on completing the 3.2 miles. The event takes place on Peggy's Path, so the route is beautiful and proceeds from the event are used to kickoff our fundraising efforts for the American Heart Association. We are looking forward to another wonderful event. Join Jack Santora, Exercise Physiologist, on April 30 as he discusses how to move past your exercise plateaus. During this Expert Is In presentation Jack will review the limiting factors to progress and the most commonly perceived reasons we get stuck in an exercise plateau. Proper goal setting and tracking to overcoming barriers will also be discussed.

With the warmer weather around the corner, it is a perfect time to think about how you can increase your level of physical activity when you are not at the Center. The more steps you in get in each day the healthier you can become. Park farther away from entrances, take the stairs instead of the elevator, commit to 10 minutes of outdoor activity every day and be active whenever you can. Being physically active is not only good for our physical health, but also for our mental health. Exercise and physical activity can be a great stress reliever. When you find yourself feeling "stressed out," take a few minutes to walk outside, take some deep breaths and allow yourself a short mental vacation. Being aware of your mental health as well as your physical health can go a long way in living a longer and healthier life.

Thank you for being active members at MHHC. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and make a positive impact on your lives. We are honored that you choose to come to MHHC, and we will continue to work hard for you.

Save the Date for Our Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk

The Annual McConnell Heart Health Center 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, April 26, on the McConnell Heart Health Center Campus. Runner's race starts at 8:00 a.m. and the walker's race will begin at 8:30 a.m. Cost for members and non-members is $15. All proceeds benefit the American Heart Association and the Ohio Health Foundation.

Race registration forms are now available at the McConnell Heart Health Center and Front Runner.

The Date of Our Quarterly Blood Drive has Changed

Due to a scheduling error, the American Red Cross will now be at McConnell holding our quarterly blood drive on Monday, April 14, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Meeting Room A, instead of the previously scheduled date of April 21.

Because of the date change, we are still in need of many donors, as our country's blood level remains urgent! If you would like to donate, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS or the front desk at (614) 566.3820 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are always welcome, but space is limited. Please bring a valid picture ID. Thank you in advance for your help!

Take a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Short Course

An internationally-acclaimed stress reduction program based in the practice of "mindfulness."

This program meets on four consecutive Wednesdays beginning May 14, 2014, 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost for MHHC members is $75 and non-members $95. A list of Frequently Asked Questions and answers is available at the Communication Center. Registration is required. Please contact the Communication Center (614) 566.5356 to register. Read the flyer/FAQ for more information.

Donate Your Books

We welcome any book donations you would like to make to the The Buck-A-Book table. The table is set up at different times during the year, and 100% of the proceeds benefit organizations such as the Arthritis Foundation, American Heart Association and Operation Feed. If you have books to donate, we would be happy to receive them from you and include them in the fundraising events. Thank you!
