Prostate cancer screenings save lives

The best way to find out if you’re due for a screening is to discuss your risk for prostate cancer with your physician. Generally, we follow the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommendation of:

  • A baseline screening for men ages 45 to 49.
  • Screening consideration for men ages 50 to 70 every one to four years depending on the baseline screening results.
  • Screening only in healthy men older than age 70.
  • Screening only in men who have a life expectancy beyond 10 years at any age.

A prostate cancer diagnosis can leave you with a lot of questions. To understand your best treatment route, you can get a second opinion without a doctor referral from our specialists. The Prostate Cancer Second Opinion Clinic offers everything associated with your care in one convenient location. In a single visit, you'll receive:

  • Extensive case evaluation and virtual consultation by our expert urologic surgeon, radiation oncologist, medical oncologist, genetic counselor and physical therapist.
  • Seamless coordination by an advanced practice provider and nurse navigator that will help guide the patient through their visit and into follow-up care.
  • Guidance on available treatments and answers to patient questions, including new innovative treatment and clinical trials.
  • Education from dedicated staff about surgical and radiation options.
  • Confidence through information to make informed decisions about your care.
  • Appropriate referrals for additional testing.

Genetic risk and prostate cancer

Some prostate cancers run in the family. Our genetic counselors provide comprehensive risk assessment for hereditary cancer. They can help determine whether the cancer in someone’s family is hereditary and develop a comprehensive ongoing care plan.

How we treat prostate cancer

Our multidisciplinary team of prostate cancer experts work together to provide comprehensive treatment options.

Surgery

Our expert prostate surgeons collaborate with other specialists to precisely determine your best treatment approach. Our surgical capabilities include:

  • Open prostatectomy
  • Radical retropubic prostatectomy
  • Minimally invasive prostatectomy
  • Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) enables your surgeon to perform some surgeries with more precision, flexibility and control. Advantages of these minimally invasive procedures usually include less pain, a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery.
Medical oncology

Our chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies are highly individualized. Your medical oncologist, in collaboration with your prostate cancer care team, will work together to determine and monitor the most effective chemotherapy treatment for your cancer. Our outpatient infusion centers offer a comfortable, convenient setting for treatment.

We also offer targeted therapies. These drug treatments block the growth and spread of cancer by interfering with specific molecules that are involved in the growth, progression and spread of cancer. This includes hormone therapy.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is unique to each individual and directed by your radiation oncologist. It can also be used for cancer that returns in the area where the prostate was surgically removed or to simply relieve symptoms in advanced prostate cancer. There are two main types of radiation commonly used:

  • External beam radiation therapy (EBRT)
  • Brachytherapy/seed implantation

All our radiation therapy locations have real-time access to your plan of care, so you can schedule your appointments at the location that’s best for you.

Interventional radiology

One of the newest and most aggressive options in cancer treatment today, interventional radiology targets and treats cancers that cannot be treated surgically by using heating, cooling or microwave energy to kill tumor cells. Patients benefit from low-risk complications and, in some cases, return home the same day.

Cancer rehabilitation

Our specialized therapists can develop an exercise program to improve joint mobility, restore flexibility, control urinary and sexual function, reduce pain and improve strength so you can safely return to your usual activities.
