The APP Critical Care Fellowship Core Clinical Rotations

These rotations provide fundamental experience and core competency development in the primary practice settings that provide acute care services.

Medical/Cardiac Critical Care

Purpose: Develop knowledge and experience of complex multi-system acutely medically ill critical care patient, common critical care diagnoses and treatments. 

Specific focuses include:

  • Acute Respiratory Failure Identification & Management
  • Ventilator Modalities and Management
  • Hemodynamic Support/ Shock Management
  • Sepsis Identification and Management
  • Inotropic/ Vasopressor Review
  • Appropriate Empiric Antibiotic Therapy
  • Cardiovascular Resuscitation
  • Nutritional Requirements for the Critically Ill Patient
  • Management of patients with intraaortic balloon pumps
  • Advanced management of heart failure
  • Diagnosis of dysrhythmias, use of inotropes and afterload reducing agents

Neuro-Critical Care

Purpose: Develop knowledge and experience of complex critical care patients with neurologic, neurosurgical and neurotrauma issues. 

Specific focuses include:

  • Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
  • Ischemic Stroke
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke
  • Seizure/ Status Epilepticus
  • Post-op Neurosurgical Issues
  • Management of ICP Monitors and Ventricular Drains
  • Neuro-trauma
  • Neuroradiology Review 

Surgical Critical Care/ Trauma

Purpose: Develop knowledge and experience of complex critical care patients with surgical issues and post-op surgical patients.

Specific focuses include:

  • General post-operative care
  • Management of surgical complications
  • Pancreatitis management
  • Necrotizing fasciitis identification and management
  • Acute post-op pain management

Emergency Medicine

Purpose: Develop knowledge and experience of emergency room patients and develop the skills needed to assist in the rapid resuscitation and transition of patients to critical care. 

Specific focuses include:

  • Early identification of critically ill and criteria for admission
  • Developing initial plan of care and differential diagnosis
