Stroke Program

Stroke Program

OhioHealth's message to the community is simple and direct: Know the signs and symptoms of a stroke, and know where to go for treatment.

OhioHealth visits many central Ohio communities each year, educating the public about advanced stroke care now available to them through the OhioHealth Stroke Network and, as importantly, helping them understand their roles in the battle against stroke.

The OhioHealth Stroke Network

A stroke is a medical emergency where every second counts and immediate, expert intervention can help preserve brain function and prevent disability. Our stroke network uses advanced telemedicine to connect emergency teams at community hospitals to specialists in critical care and stroke at our OhioHealth facilities in Columbus, Ohio. So you get direct and complete access to advanced technology and critical care therapies unmatched by any other hospital network in central Ohio. Learn how the OhioHealth Stroke Network works.

Providing Specialized, Comprehensive Stroke Care

Riverside Methodist Hospital and Grant Medical Center are certified by The Joint Commission as Primary Stroke Centers. Our physicians are often the first in the world to research new stroke treatments through clinical trials, allowing our patients access to the most leading-edge stroke treatments and prevention techniques available.

These devices, often used in combination, include:

  • tPA (Tissue Plasminogen Activator)
  • The MERCI Clot Retriever
  • Aspiration
  • Stents
  • Penumbra Stroke System

Riverside Methodist's Comprehensive Stroke Center

Riverside Neuroscience Institute's Comprehensive Stroke Center of Excellence was the first healthcare facility in Ohio certified as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission for exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. The stroke center treats more stroke patients than any other hospital in central Ohio. Read more about The Stroke Center at Riverside Methodist.

Grant Medical Center's Level I Stroke Expertise

At OhioHeath's Grant Medical Center, stroke victims receive the expertise of a Level I trauma center and a neuroscience team providing 24-hour care. In fact, Grant was the first hospital in Columbus to earn the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award. State-of-the-Art Stroke Rehabilitation

OhioHealth’s Brain and Stroke Rehabilitation Center in Upper Arlington treats more stroke survivors than any outpatient therapy clinic in central Ohio. This state-of-the-art center features functional treatment environments for patients, including a model home, garage, work bench, restaurant booth and driving simulator. In addition, our Acute Inpatient Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Riverside Methodist is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), with an additional designation as a Stroke Rehabilitation Specialty Program.
