Riverside's General Surgery Residency is a five-year, ACGME-accredited program. Five categorical and four preliminary residents per year are accepted into this comprehensive program. You’ll practice in Riverside Methodist’s 1,059-bed teaching hospital — ranked among the nation's best.

A Comprehensive Curriculum That Sets Us Apart
We offer an unparalleled breadth of surgical experience and a high patient volume.
Our program focuses on all general surgery areas, as well as areas for those interested in obtaining a fellowship or transitioning to practice. Clinically, the program is structured to ensure residents assume progressive responsibility in patient care, get exposure to a wide variety of surgical conditions and develop expertise in surgical skills.
The first year consists of medical and surgical rotations, while the second and third years emphasize general surgery and surgical sub-specialties. In the fourth and fifth years, residents assume primary responsibility for the patients of the attending staff, uninsured patients in the hospital and outpatient clinics and trauma patients. This takes place while under the supervision of appropriately credentialed teaching physicians. Our program does not have fellows to compete with in the institution.

The Center for Medical Education & Innovation (CME+I) replicates a hospital environment – from scrub sinks, operating rooms and equipment to cross-disciplinary collaboration. This state-of-the-art facility features varied simulation technologies and capabilities, including a monitored Virtual Care Unit (VCU) with adult, pediatric and infant patient simulators.

Residents will gain experience in assisting and performing a variety of surgical procedures at The Center for Medical Education & Innovation (CME+I), under the supervision of surgical physicians and associates.
- LapSim – laparoscopic simulator training
- FES – fundamentals of endoscopic surgery
- FLS – fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery
- ABLS – advanced burn life support
- Robotics – technology, techniques and robotic-assisted procedures
- Vascular surgery – open surgery and endovascular
- Other procedures – general surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and other specialized procedures and skills

Our General Surgery Residency Program is committed to fostering scholarly activity, innovation, and lifelong learning. Residents are encouraged to participate in research throughout their training, with opportunities to collaborate with faculty on clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, case reports, and other scholarly projects. Residents receive mentorship and support in developing projects, present their work at regional and national conferences, and pursue publications in peer-reviewed journals. Through these experiences, residents strengthen their critical thinking, research, and evidence-based practice while contributing to advancements in surgical care.
