Knowing stroke risk factors and making positive changes to your lifestyle habits can greatly reduce your risk of stroke.
Risk factors listed on the National Stroke Association website include:
Controllable stroke risk factors:
- High Blood Pressure
- Atrial Fibrillation
- High Cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Atherosclerosis
- Tobacco Use and Smoking
- Alcohol Use
- Physical Inactivity
- Obesity
Uncontrollable stroke risk factors:
- Age
- Gender
- Race
- Family History
- Previous Stroke or TIA
- Fibromuscular Dysplasia
- Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO or Hole in the Heart)
