Diaper rash

A patchwork of bright red skin on your baby's bottom is probably diaper rash, a common rash typically caused by prolonged contact with urine or feces. To treat diaper rash, air out your baby's bottom. To reduce inflammation, apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream several times a day. Consult your baby's doctor if the rash doesn't improve within a few days, begins to blister or spreads beyond the diaper area.

To prevent diaper rash, keep your baby's bottom as clean and dry as possible. Change your baby's diaper as soon as it gets wet or soiled, let your baby go without a diaper for short periods of time, and use a protective cream or ointment that contains zinc oxide or petrolatum as needed.
