Q: After a miscarriage, how long should I wait to try to conceive again?

A: This is an excellent question and there are many misconceptions regarding this issue.  Many experts suggest waiting 3-6 months but there is no scientific data supporting this opinion.  Most women will ovulate within 2-4 weeks of completing a miscarriage and will be able to conceive.  Women need to be aware of this so that they do not become pregnant before they are ready to do so.

If a woman has experienced 3 or more consecutive miscarriages then she should delay becoming pregnant until she can be evaluated for conditions that may predispose her for recurrent pregnancy loss.  If a woman has experienced an uncomplicated miscarriage (i.e. no infections, surgical complications, etc.) and is emotionally ready to attempt to conceive again, then she may do so as soon as her normal menstrual cycle resumes.
