Q.  What is happening when my water breaks at home and what should I do?

A.  "Water breaking" or rupture of membrane can occur spontaneously without contractions or more commonly with labor. If you notice a persistent wetness or sudden gush of vaginal fluid, note the color and consistency and call your physician for further instructions. Depending on the gestational age and circumstances of your pregnancy, you will most likely be asked to go to either your physician's office or the hospital labor and delivery department for confirmation.
