Q: Are insect repellants and sprays safe for my children?

A: Insect repellants containing DEET with concentrations of 10-30% appear to be safe.  DEET should not be used in combination with a sunscreen.  Unlike sunscreen, DEET is not water-soluble and will last up to eight hours.  Do not apply insect repellants under clothing.  Do not use on hands or around eyes or mouth.  Wash treated skin with soap and water after returning indoors.  DEET is not recommended for use on children under two months of age.  Avoid bright colored clothing and use unscented detergent.  Perfumed soaps and deodorant also attract insects and should be avoided as well.
