Glossary of Terms

Asynchronous learning
A self-paced learning event. Learners are online at different times and cannot communicate without time delay. Examples: courses taken via Internet, CD-ROM, Web presentation, or videotaped classes (LearnFrame, 2001).

Blended learning
A training curriculum that combines multiple types of media. Typically, blended learning refers to a combination of classroom-based training with self-paced e-learning (Learning Guru).

Blog
"Blog" is short for "Web Log" and refers to short messages that are posted onto a website by an author. Blogs are typically informal and personal messages, almost like daily diary entries. A blog does not allow visitors to change the original posted material, only add comments to the original content. (Learning Guru and JuniperOnlineMedia).  

Computer-based training (CBT)
Any instructional event that can be accessed via a standalone computer (LearnFrame, 2001).

Community learning
Community learning is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of students working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product (E-learning).

OhioHealth University
An educational entity that is a strategic tool designed to assist its parent organization in achieving its mission by conducting activities that cultivate individual and organizational learning, knowledge and wisdom (Allen, 2002, p.9).

Delivery
Any method of providing education. Methods include instructor-led training, Web-based distance learning, online laboratories, CD-ROMs, interactive TV, videos, and books (LearnFrame, 2001).

Discussion Forum
Forums on the Internet or an intranet where users can post messages for others to read. (Learning Circuits)

Distance learning
Situation in which the instructor and students are separated by time, location, or both. Courses are delivered to remote locations via synchronous or asynchronous means (LearnFrame, 2001).

E-book
Information and graphics that have been organized in electronic or computerized lessons or chapters and made available via computer (LearnFrame, 2001).

E-learning
Education via the Internet, network, or standalone computer. Network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. e-learning refers to using electronic applications and processes to learn. e-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM (LearnFrame, 2001).

Instructor-led training (ILT)
A scheduled event conducted by an instructor, either in a classroom or on the network (LearnFrame, 2001).

Learner
Anyone who accesses information to increase his or her skills and knowledge (LearnFrame, 2001). In our system any learner is a student.

Learning Management System (LMS)
Internet based software that deploys, manages, tracks and reports on interaction between the learner and the content & the learner and the instructor. In particular, learning management systems perform student registration, track learner progress, record test scores, and indicate course completions, and finally allow instructor trainers to assess the performance of their students (E-learning).

Multimedia
Encompasses text, images, animation, audio, and video. Multimedia can be anything between a PowerPoint slide show and a complex interactive simulation (E-learning).

Podcast/Audiocast
An audio broadcast that has been converted to an MP3 file or other audio file format for playback in a digital music player or computer. The "pod" in podcast was coined from "iPod", the predominant portable, digital music player, and although podcasts are mostly verbal, they may contain music. (PCMAG)

Self-paced learning
Learning in which the pace and timing of content delivery are determined by the learner. Sometimes called Independent Study or Self Learning Packets (LearnFrame, 2001).

Subject-matter expert (SME)
An individual who has substantial knowledge about and skills in a specific subject (LearnFrame, 2001).

Synchronous learning
Real-time learning situation that can include immediate, two-way communication between participants (LearnFrame, 2001).

Virtual classroom (VC)
A scheduled offering that is available at multiple locations (either desktop or classroom) via a network (LearnFrame, 2001).

Web-based training (WBT)
Any instructional event that can be accessed via the Internet or the Web (LearnFrame, 2001).

Webinar
A small, synchronous, online learning event in which a presenter and audience members communicate via text, chat or audio about concepts often illustrated via online slides and/or an electronic whiteboard. Webinars are often archived as well for asynchronous on-demand access. (Learning Circuits)

Wiki
A collaborative website that comprises the perpetual collective work of many authors. Similar to a blog in structure and logic, a wiki allows anyone to edit, delete or modify content that has been placed on the website. (JuniperOnlineMedia)
