What Defines McConnell Heart Care - We encompasse the nationally recognized heart care teams at Riverside, Grant and Doctors hospitals, as well as the staff of the McConnell Heart Health Center.

Heart & Vascular Services >

OhioHealth offers a comprehensive approach to heart and vascular care designed to address our community's dramatic need for heart health education, prevention of heart disease, and the highest quality heart care.

Our Columbus hospitals perform more cardiac surgeries, diagnostic heart catheterizations and angioplasties than all other Columbus adult hospitals combined.

Financial support from John H. McConnell and other generous donors has allowed us to expand our heart programs and facilities that, together, give you access to the broadest range of heart and vascular treatments available in central Ohio, including:

New treatments

Riverside decreases door-to-balloon time with the new STEMI Alert
Getting blocked arteries open as soon as possible is the reason behind the new STEMI Alert at Riverside.  Like a Trauma Alert, a STEMI Alert alerts physicians and staff to rapidly and efficiently respond to heart attacks in an established protocol, 24/7.  The current time for STEMI since the process has been in place is 51 minutes* door-to-balloon.  In one case the door-to-balloon time was only 20 minutes.

Reducing door-to-balloon times is a challenge, requiring the coordination of EMS, Emergency Department staff, cardiologists and nurses.  Always a leader in heart care in central Ohio, Riverside continues to work to improve upon its already exemplary performance.

*51 minutes or less, on average, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Dedication to research and innovation

We are at the forefront of pioneering some of today's leading heart treatments, such as drug-eluting stents, pulmonary vein ablation and biventricular pacing for heart failure. We're also a national leader in the developing field of endovascular intervention. This is a new method of treating abdominal aortic aneurysms that shortens recovery time and reduces the complications of surgery.

In addition, a Doctors Hospital cardiothoracic surgeon performed the first endovascular radial vein harvesting procedure in central Ohio. The procedure reduces the size of the incision used to harvest veins for heart bypass procedures, allowing the patient to heal more quickly and with less discomfort.

We also participate in clinical trials  to help advance the treatment of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Riverside and Grant - in partnership with our physicians - are leaders in cardiac research, with hundreds of trials for pharmacological interventions, medical devices and minimally invasive techniques.
