Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Breast Cancer > Detection & Diagnosis >

One tool for early detection of breast cancer is breast MRI. An MRI is a painless procedure in which radio waves and powerful magnets linked to a computer are used to take detailed pictures of areas inside the body without the use of radiation.

Breast MRI is an evolving technology and a supplemental tool to help diagnose breast cancer. Breast MRI should not replace the appropriate, standard breast cancer screening and diagnostic tools:

  • Monthly breast self-examination
  • Physical examination of the breast by your physician
  • Screening and diagnostic mammography
  • Diagnostic breast ultrasound

The American Cancer Society has reviewed new evidence regarding the use of Screening Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging for breast cancer. The expert panel reviewed this evidence and defined three levels of risk and recommendations for screening asymptomatic women.
