The Masters in Health-System Pharmacy Administration program is in conjunction with The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Pharmacy. The focus of this program is to foster the development of future health-system pharmacy administrators.
You will receive your Masters Degree in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from OSU and complete residency training at the designated hospital. The program length is 24 months.
After completion of the MS/PGY1 program, residents may apply to the MHA program for an additional year of classes, but the resident position at Riverside Methodist will not be held during the third year.
Admission requirements
- Graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy
- A 3.0 cumulative grade point average (on a 4 point scale)
- Eligibility for licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Ohio

- Letter of Intent, Curriculum Vitae, Supplemental Application, OhioHealth Application, Official Transcript and three letters of recommendation due by January 4, 2010.

Resident responsibilities
- Work commitment every other weekend (PGY1 year) and every fourth weekend (PGY2 year) in both clinical and distribution capacities
- Work one of three summer holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day)
- Work one of three winter holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years)
- Rotate through an administrative on-call system
- Work seven night shifts over two years
- Poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting both years
- Oral presentation at Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference both years
Academic responsibilities
- Majority of didactic work and PGY1 completed in the first year
- Second year is a PGY2 residency with an emphasis in pharmacy administration
- Completion of a Masters project
- Optional third year in MHA program (after completion of residency)
Residency phases
- First year
- Orientation to the hospital, training in central pharmacy operations, training with decentralized pharmacists, computer order entry, medication therapy management
- Project management: assigned various projects by pharmacy administrators and clinicians, administrative responsibilities
- Completion of some of the PGY-1 required rotations including a longitudinal clinic rotation
- Second year
- Required Clinical Rotations (4 or 6 weeks, depending on interests):
- Intensive Care Unit
- Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
- Neuroscience Critical Care
- General Medicine
- Elective Rotations (4 or 6 weeks, depending on interests):
- Administrative (primary focus to meet PGY2 requirements) +/- clinical
Residency rotations available
- Clinical Pharmacy Rotations: Intensive Care Unit, General Medicine/Medical Intermediate Care Unit, Cardiac Critical Care, Neuroscience, Pain, Oncology, Medication Safety, Nephrology, Emergency Medicine, Behavioral Health
- Longitudinal Rotations: Ambulatory Care including Anticoagulation, OhioHealthy Diabetes and Asthma Clinic, Leadership, Drug Information/Drug Policy Development and Monitoring, and Committee Involvement (i.e. P&T)
